The Hunger Games

Sci-fi/Action

When Katniss Everdeen’s younger sister is selected as a tribute, she volunteers for the games. As the male tribute, Peeta is selected.

First Plot Point

The act of faking a romantic relationship between Katniss and Peeta begins. Katniss gets an 11 in her private lesson, and the game designers draw a bullseye on her for when the game begins. She’ll never be able to get in under the radar again. They take part in the game. She goes deep into the forests, trying to kill as much time as she can. She is undecided on what she will do. Tributes perish, and she is forced to leave her safe haven when a wall of fire followed by fireballs propels her in a specific direction. The professions track her down and chase her up a tree (with Peeta). She notices a nest of tracker jackers descending on the careers, causing them to flee. Peeta reappears and screams for her to flee. She behaves in this manner.

Midpoint

She joins forces with Rue. They band together to find a way to level the playing field between them and the other tributes. They make the decision to kill the supplies stockpile near the cornucopia that the careers were relying on to stay alive. Katniss is victorious, and she returns to the woods to meet Rue.

Second Pinch Point

Rue is killed in front of her. She reacts by killing the boy that killed Rue.

Third Plot Point

Seneca Crane makes an announcement about a rule change. He claims that two people from the same district will now work together to win games. Katniss tracks down Peeta, discovers that he is critically injured, and must nurse him back to health. She has to put her life on the line in order to obtain medication, but she succeeds. Panem has been fed a love novel, which she accepts. When they are well enough, the game makers drain all of the water around them, forcing them to travel to the lake in the arena’s middle, where they know they will face Cato. Cato is the last tribute they must defeat.

Climax

Cato, Katniss, and Peeta are being pursued by a pack of vicious wolf-like creatures. They dash to the cornucopia and scale it in an attempt to flee the beasts. Cato tries to manipulate the situation by using Peeta as a bargaining chip, but Katniss shoots him in the hand, causing him to fall down and be mauled. He is able to make it through the night. When Cato tries to linger with the animals gnawing at him, she decides to put him out of his misery. It’s a sacrificial death.

Resolution

Katniss and Peeta have been resurrected. Katniss is also torn between her feelings for Peeta and Gale. When she hears from Haymitch that the capitol is upset about what they did with the berries, she continues to accept the illusion of love she’s created. He tells her that the only thing she can say is that she can’t bear the thought of killing Peeta. She does so, and they return to District 12 knowing that if they don’t want the Capitol to come after them, she’ll have to go along with the lie.
